What do people really think about the metaverse?

01 January 2000

Despite all the current hype around 'the metaverse' it doesn't actually exist yet – but the building blocks are being laid.

Crypto, NFTs and blockchain technology are the foundations of the next iteration of the internet. To explore the creative and commercial opportunities this rapid innovation is creating for progressive brands, we surveyed 1000 people to gauge what the average person in the UK really thinks about the metaverse.

Do they know what it is and do they even care?

Read on to discover more of the results.

Key findings include: 41% of respondents admitting the metaverse means nothing to them and 50% stating they wouldn't attend an event in the metaverse – even if it was hosted by their favourite brand.

In October 2021, following Facebook’s rebrand to 'Meta', 2.5 million people searched the term ‘metaverse’ on the internet. The general tone of the searches was one of confusion, questions ranged from ‘what is the metaverse?’ to ‘is Facebook the metaverse?’.

This confusion is in stark contrast to the over-hyped excitement emitting from numerous publications, brands and platforms.

In order to get a clearer picture of what the general public actually thinks about the metaverse, we surveyed 1005 people to find out what they know and whether they even care.

We recently held an event for brands who want to cut through the jargon and have a real conversation about what the metaverse means for the future of marketing and brand experiences.
